Advantages of LNG Fuel in the Truck Transport

In order to properly fulfil its role in modern society, the transport industry must constantly evolve by developing and implementing new solutions. At Gniotpol Trailers we constantly strive to implement innovative technologies being aware of our responsibility for the future of transport. Recently we helped kick-start the Quiet Revolution by cooperating with Volvo Trucks in order to bring the first electric truck onto Polish roads.

However, this is not the end of our efforts on the road to modern transport in Poland. Since the very beginning of Gniotpol Trailers, we have been undertaking various innovative projects with full commitment. In this way, GT technologies go hand in hand with other modern developments in the industry.

Truck Transport More Environmentally Friendly

Heavy road transport is currently the primary form of the freight transport, keeping the economy running, and there are no signs that might suggest that this is about to change any time soon. After all, trucks are the most flexible means of delivery, relying on an extensive network of roads and motorways. This allows them to go virtually anywhere, making them a key link in supply chains around the world.

According to a report by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), 6.2 million trucks were registered in the whole European Union in 2019. Among all European countries, Poland is the leader, boasting the largest fleet on the continent with more than 1.1 million vehicles. However, these impressive figures come with responsibilities. As the number of trucks continues to rise, so does the level of pollution they generate. With the relentless demand for transport services, our industry faces the challenge of developing solutions to minimise the carbon footprint generated by vehicles in our industry. The way to achieve this is through the use of alternative drives, including those using alternative fuels.

Types of Alternative Fuels

When we think of out-of-the-box, modern solutions for vehicle propulsion, electric motors are usually the first ones that come to mind. No wonder: vehicles powered in this way are gaining in popularity – both personal cars and trucks.

Alternative fuels are another solution for making transport more environmentally and socially friendly. Their idea is to use energy sources other than those derived from crude oil. Such alternatives are, for example, biofuel and hydrogen. However, natural gas, in the form of CNG and LNG for trucks, is the most popular in the transport sector.

Types of Alternative Fuels

The use of alternative fuels brings benefits on many levels. Above all, they are a more sensible solution for our environment due to the lesser amount of pollution generated. Their use also allows for independence from oil, which translates into greater energy independence for European countries. Ultimately, these fuels are both cleaner and more economical.

European Market Leader in Alternative Fuels

The trend of using alternative fuels is increasing year by year among truck manufacturers. One of the leading leaders in this field is the Italian truck manufacturer IVECO, which has been a trendsetter in the application of alternative solutions in the field of motor transport for years. Since 1996, the company has manufactured nearly 25,000 natural gas-powered engines, making it the European market leader in this type of trucks.

The solutions proposed by IVECO provide an alternative to the diesel engines so common in European trucks. LNG-fuelled vehicles are at the forefront of the company’s solutions. What is it and how is the use of this energy source changing the face of transport in Europe?

Why is it Worth Choosing LNG?

This acronym, which stands for liquefied natural gas, refers to natural gas in its liquid form. During the liquefaction process, it is thoroughly purified, which results in a very clean fuel with a high methane content. By removing components such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen, the combustion of liquefied gas generates significantly less pollution. Moreover, natural gas in this form reduces its volume by nearly 600 times, which allows it to be transported without the use of pipelines. The advantages of LNG make it an important resource in the European Union, which is the largest importer of natural gas in the world.

However, the use of LNG poses a significant challenge in terms of the design of vehicles which are powered this fuel. Natural gas liquefies at -162°C, which translates into the need for appropriate storage conditions and adequate safety measures. Therefore, trucks require special tanks in case of LNG so as to enable the use of this energy source.

Specialised LNG Truck Bodies

In order for an LNG engine to successfully power a truck, it is necessary for the body to be suitably adapted for this purpose. The legal conditions for their use in our country are precise and stringent. According to Polish law, LNG-powered chassis must be approved for operation by the Transport Technical Supervision (TDT).

Gniotpol Trailers is one of the few manufacturers who hold TDT authorisation to manufacture gas bodywork. Our production plant in Kurznie is equipped with a testing station for LNG and CNG tanks. They are operated by our specialist G3 gas licensed personnel. It makes it possible to carry out the gas tank inspection procedure already at the production stage in our factory, which significantly reduces the time necessary to hand over the final product to the customer.

As a leading manufacturer of trailers, semi-trailers and bodies, we are fully committed to working with IVECO on their mission to make transport sustainable and socially and environmentally friendly. More to come on the latest results of our partnership.
